About seven years ago, I started a mail-order business with a couple of friends. It was an idea that came to me while I was sitting in an office -- working for someone else!

We actually put $2,500 in the bank to start the business, but we never even touched it. We had money rolling in from our first ad before the first bills came in, and the whole business took off from there. And we did close to $1 million in sales that first year.

This year, I'll personally make over $300,000 from that business -- working from my home. All from checks that drop into my mailbox every day from the wonderful world of mail-order. Next year, it looks like I'll make over $400,000.

The Amazing Success of
Sy Sperling

Sy Sperling was balding prematurely, and he thought that his hair loss was hurting his chances at dating. A friend recommended that he go to a small salon in New York that offered something called a "hair weave." It was sort of a permanent hair replacement that, unlike a toupee, could not blow off.

Sy had it done and liked the way it felt and looked. He went into business with the salon owner, forming what would eventually be called the Hair Club for Men.

But "hair weave" had a negative connotation, so Sy came up with the term "hair-replacement system"... and is credited as the founder of the hair-replacement industry.

He started running small ads in the New York Daily News with the headline "Bald?" Then, with $5,000 he borrowed against his credit card, he created the first of many successful direct-response TV commercials. In it, Sy told viewers, "I'm not only the president of the Hair Club for Men, I'm also a client."

Sy was an Inc. magazine Entrepreneur of the Year winner in 1992. He became extremely wealthy, with as many as 60 Hair Club locations nationwide with annual revenues of more than $60 million. Recently, he sold the Hair Club for a huge sum and retired to the beach in Florida.

The Man With the "Golden Touch"

Richard Schefren entered the business world by taking over a used-clothing store and building it up to a $6.5 million business in four years. It was an amazing success... and so profitable that he was able to retire by the time he was 26.

But retirement didn't last very long. He built a recording studio and a record label that brought him national recognition.

He eventually sold out his record label to a partnership that included Warner Chapel, the world's largest record-distribution company. And he retired again.

(It's Not What You Might Think)

Here's the ordinary advice that's given to someone who wants to start his or her own business. This is from an article in More magazine that's supposed to help its readers become entrepreneurs:

Consult with an attorney to make sure you set up the right legal structure.

Check with your municipal authority to make sure "they permit a venture like yours to work out of the home."

Buy business insurance and "talk to an accountant or attorney" to make sure you're not missing anything.

Get a toll-free phone number (to give the impression that your business is much bigger than it is). Invest in great business cards and letterhead stationery.

Hmm ... I'll tell you what I think. Follow this advice and you're almost certainly doomed to fail.

Because every one of these suggestions involves:

(a) spending money, and
(b) making your business life complicated.

None of them has anything to do with creating cash flow by selling the product. And that is the single most important thing you need to do.

You won't get your business off the ground that way. Instead, try these suggestions:

Don't do anything you don't have to do until you have made the first sale. Setting up a corporation, buying insurance, and get-ting your local status secured is a crazy waste of time for a startup operator. Prove to yourself and anyone who might want to invest in you that your brilliant idea works. Do that by making a sale!

After you have made the first sale, make another one. And then another one. Don't print business cards. Don't worry about stationery. Just keep making sales. You need the cash for the next step.

Once you are confident you can make a sale and have proven that your idea is profitable (i.e., you get paid more than you spend), you have to design a marketing program so you can roll out the selling process indefinitely. This involves advertising. Direct-response advertising is best. Base your plan on the success of someone else. Don't reinvent the wheel.

Don't worry about notifying regulators and government agencies that you are going to start a business. All they want to do is control and monitor you. Since your business isn't going yet ... since it has no cash flow ... it's not really a business. There will be plenty of time to get yourself hamstrung with regulations later. Follow the law, but don't be foolish.

Buy business cards and/or stationery only if and when you actually need them. This time may never come. My friend Michael Masterson says, "I run and/or own at least a half-dozen multimillion-dollar businesses and I don't have cards or stationery for any of them."
